What do you get when you climb a smokestack? A spectacular view!

Standing on a platform about halfway up the 828-foot stack on the site of the former Asarco smelter, Jon Powell of Industrial Access adjusts a small video camera atop his safety helmet. The company was inspecting the smokestack inside and out for the Save the Stacks group, which wants to preserve the iconic structures.

The crew was surveying the two stacks still standing on the site of the former Asarco smelter for Save the Stacks, a local group that wants the taller iconic stack preserved. The $34,000 study examined the interior and exterior of the stacks. As reported by El Paso Inc., site trustee Roberto Puga recently gave Save the Stacks an extra 30 days, until Dec. 4, to find funding for preservation, if the stacks are found to be structurally sound.
