A piece of El Paso history topples to the ground as the ASARCO stacks fall
El Paso, TX (KTSM) — The ASARCO smokestacks toppled to the ground Saturday morning after a long-awaited, yet controversial demolition.
It took approximately 45 seconds for the explosions to collapse both towers that once stood past 800 and 600 feet tall. The emotionally- charged resistance for demolition occurred in the years leading up to Saturday’s event with citizens protesting over environmental, economic and community preservation concerns. In the end, the City’s decision to bring down the stack held ground up until the old refinery’s downfall.
